TinCaps Prevail at South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (May 3, 2015) – The TinCaps won the finale of their three-game series at Four Winds Field, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon. The game was a pitcher’s duel for six innings before Fort Wayne prevailed in the final three frames.

No runs were scored until the top of the seventh inning when the TinCaps put up three. Designated hitter Henry Charles plated right fielder Nick Torres with a single off South Bend reliever Ryan McNeil (L, 0-1). Two batters later, first baseman Trae Santos drove home third baseman Duanel Jones and Charles.

Although South Bend (13-11) responded with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh, Fort Wayne added two insurance runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to push its lead to 6-2. Jones hit a two-run double in the eighth, while catcher Miguel Del Castillo had a sacrifice fly in the ninth to score Santos, who tripled.
South Bend put up a run for naught up in the ninth.

Fort Wayne (7-14) starter Dinelson Lamet kept the home team off the board for three innings as he used a mid-90s fastball to strike out five. T.J. Weir (W, 1-0) was the first man out of the bullpen and blanked South Bend for three frames.

A key defensive play came in the bottom of the seventh as the TinCaps clung to a 3-2 lead. Gleyber Torres was at first base with two outs when Chesney Young clubbed a double to right field. Fort Wayne’s Torres quickly fielded the ball on the warning track and fired to the cutoff man, second baseman Nick Vilter, who relayed it to the plate. Just before Young reached home, Del Castillo applied the tag and the TinCaps kept the lead.

Fort Wayne had 11 hits Sunday, marking the 12th time in 21 games this year the club has had double-digit hits.
The TinCaps continue their six-game road trip Monday at Dayton. Fort Wayne right-hander Yimmi Brasoban is set to start the 7:00 p.m. game against righty Tejay Antone (1-2, 2.78). The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app.
