Torres homers in series opener at South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (May 1, 2015) – In the opener of a three-game series at Four Winds Field, Fort Wayne fell to South Bend, 11-5. Nick Torres homered and had an RBI-single for the TinCaps in the loss.

This was a 3-3 game at the seventh-inning stretch before it spiraled away from Fort Wayne. South Bend scored seven times in the bottom of the seventh to break the contest open.

The final score doesn’t reflect that TinCaps right-handed starter Ernesto Montas allowed only two earned runs — three overall — across six innings. Montas didn’t walk a batter. But Wilson Santos (L, 0-2), who replaced Montas did walk the first batter he faced in the seventh and matters only got worse from there. Yasiel Balaguert delivered the dagger with a two-out, bases-clearing triple that made it 10-3.

Seven of South Bend’s runs in the game came with two outs, including five of its runs in the seventh. Fort Wayne (6-13) also dug itself a hole by committing four errors, while South Bend (12-10) only had one miscue in the field.

After South Bend scored in the second to take a 1-0 lead, Torres launched a solo shot in the third — his second homer of the season. The left fielder is the first on the team to hit two homers.

South Bend responded with a pair in the home third to go up, 3-1. The TinCaps got a run back in the fourth when first baseman Trae Santos doubled home designated hitter Edwin Moreno. Fort Wayne tied the game, 3-3, in the sixth when second baseman Felipe Blanco plated right fielder Franmil Reyes on a groundout.

With the game all but out of reach, the TinCaps scored twice in the ninth. South Bend put up a superfluous run in the eighth.

David Garner (W, 1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief after Zach Hedges went the first six for the home team.

Despite the loss, the TinCaps had 10 hits. Friday was the 11th time in 19 games that Fort Wayne has tallied 10 or more hits in a game.

The TinCaps return to South Bend Saturday for the middle-game of their set at 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne is set to start left-hander Taylor Cox (0-2, 6.00) against righty Trevor Clifton (1-1, 3.09). The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app.
