Dorminy dazzles in TinCaps win
(April 30, 2015) – Behind six shutout innings from starter Thomas Dorminy and some timely hitting, the TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons, 5-2, in their series finale at Parkview Field.
The win snapped Fort Wayne’s four-game skid and stopped Dayton’s five-game win streak. The home team piled up ten hits and seven batters reached base safely Thursday night.
The last time Dorminy toed the rubber – Friday against South Bend – was also the last time the TinCaps emerged victorious and the left-hander from Florida showed the same brilliance he did in his previous outing. Dorminy fanned four hitters over six innings and didn’t allow a run. In three separate innings, he stranded runners in scoring position.
Fort Wayne (6-12) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when center fielder Michael Gettys clubbed the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall. It was his first homer of the season and his ninth extra-base hit through 17 games. Gettys is tied for the league lead in that department.
In the bottom of the second, after right fielder Franmil Reyes singled, third baseman Nick Vilter drove him in with a double to give the TinCaps a 2-0 lead.
The pair struck again in the bottom of eighth. Reyes plated two when he singled to right field, and Vilter launched a sacrifice fly to the warning track in left-center that allowed first baseman Duanel Jones to tag and score from third base.
Dayton (11-10) added two runs in the top of the ninth, but closer Bryan Verbitsky struck out Ronald Bueno to end the game.
It was the eighth time this season the TinCaps finished with double digit hits and 4,201 fans were at the ballpark to witness it. Through the first 12 games of the season in April, 57,828 spectators came out to Parkview Field — a new franchise record. (Read the news release)
The TinCaps hit the road Friday against South Bend. With Fort Wayne righty Ernesto Montas on the mound against Zach Hedges, first pitch is set for 7:35 p.m. at Four Winds Field and the game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
