Weight limit issued for Van Buren Street Bridge

News release from the Allen County Commissioners and City of Fort Wayne:

Weight Limit Issued for Van Buren Street Bridge

Fort Wayne, Indiana (April 24, 2015) – A 17-ton maximum load weight limit has been placed on the Van Buren Street Bridge in Fort Wayne until further notice.

The Allen County Board of Commissioners approved the weight limit at its legislative session today upon the recommendation of the County Highway Department, which is responsible for inspecting and repairing all bridges in the county.

Last year, the County contracted with Engineering Resources Inc. to plan for a rehab of the bridge which spans the St. Marys River. Today’s action serves as a safety precaution before any rehab work begins. The exact scope and timeline for the work is still being determined.

The limit is not expected to affect most vehicles that use the Van Buren Bridge. Trucks with loads that exceed the 17-ton limit should use alternate routes.

The City of Fort Wayne is notifying trucking companies in the area and will post weight-limit signage on Sherman and Van Buren Streets, which are designated truck routes for local delivery.
