Fort Wayne Out-Hit South Bend, Loses

(April 25, 2015) – The TinCaps out-hit the Cubs on a cold Saturday evening at Parkview Field, but fell 9-2 in game two of the three game series.

Although rain delayed the game 1 hour and 56 minutes, Parkview Field hosted its 199th consecutive game without a postponement. The last rainout in Fort Wayne was May 31, 2012.

On Saturday, the visitors got on the board first in the second inning. Four runs came across the plate after Fort Wayne (5-9) starter Ernesto Montas (L, 1-2) walked three batters and allowed a hit.

Montas was then relieved in the third inning for right-hander Yimmi Brasoban, but the two combined to yield three more runs in the frame.

Fort Wayne went into the fourth down 7-0. South Bend (8-9) extended its lead to eight runs when Trey Martin scored from third base on a wild pitch. Cael Brockmeyer then plated Chesny Young on a base hit to centerfield to push the deficit to 9-0.

The home team broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth inning. Michael Gettys tripled with one out, and two batters later Nick Torres drove him in. The Lakewood, California native finished with two hits, his eighth multi-hit game of the year.

TinCaps lefty Kyle McGrath and right-hander Wilson Santos silenced the Cubs bats the rest of the way. McGrath hurled three shutout innings and struck out five batters. Santos followed with two scoreless frames and fanned a pair.

Fort Wayne added one more run in the bottom of the ninth. Torres began the inning with a double and later came home to score when Trae Santos grounded out to the shortstop Young.

Despite the loss, the TinCaps out-hit the Cubs 6-3. Fort Wayne can win the series on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. Manager Francisco Morales plans to throw left-handed pitcher Taylor Cox (0-1, 5.73 ERA) against South Bend’s righty Ryan Williams. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, TinCaps.com, and the TuneIn Radio app, and seen on Comcast Network 81.
