All-around effort leads TinCaps by South Bend

(April 24, 2015) – The TinCaps opened a six-game homestand with a 5-1 win over South Bend on a pleasant Friday night at Parkview Field.

After South Bend (7-9) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the rest of the night belonged to Fort Wayne. Designated hitter Edwin Moreno led off the bottom of the first with a triple — his first of three hits on the night. Two batters later shortstop Franchy Cordero tied the game with an RBI groundout.

Fort Wayne (5-8) jumped in front, 2-1, in the second when third baseman Duanel Jones doubled and came in on a double by first baseman Trae Santos. The TinCaps added to their lead in the fourth thanks to a lead-off triple by left fielder Nick Torres and an RBI-single off the wall from Jones.

The home team stretched its lead to 5-1 in the eighth with a pair of insurance runs. One came in unearned fashion, while Santos also delivered an RBI single.

The TinCaps tallied 10 hits on the night — half of which went for extra bases.

Meanwhile, left-hander starter Thomas Dorminy (W, 1-2) struck out a career high six batters and limited South Bend to three hits across five frames. Seth Lucio chipped in with two scoreless innings after that before turning it over to T.J. Weir for a 1-2-3 eighth and Bryan Verbitsky for a harmless ninth.

Fort Wayne pitching racked up 11 strikeouts in all. The team didn’t commit an error defensively in a game that took 2 hours, 27 minutes.

The TinCaps look to improve to 4-1 against South Bend on the season Saturday evening at 5:05 p.m. Fort Wayne’s Ernesto Montas (2-0, 0.82) is on tap to start versus Trevor Clifton. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app, and seen on Comcast Network 81.
