Game recap from the TinCaps:

Fort Wayne comeback bid falls short at West Michigan

Comstock Park, Mich. (April 19, 2015) – For the second day in a row, the TinCaps brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning at Fifth Third Ballpark, only for their comeback bid to fall short. Fort Wayne fell to the West Michigan Whitecaps, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon.

Center fielder Michael Gettys hit an RBI-single in the fourth to plate shortstop Franchy Cordero, who had doubled, to tie the game, 1-1, at the time. The Whitecaps had taken a 1-0 lead in the first.

But in the bottom of the frame, Zach Shepherd smoked a three-run home run over the left-field fence to propel West Michigan (6-5). Shepherd’s homer came off left-hander Thomas Dorminy (L, 0-2), who allowed four runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four.

Meanwhile, Whitecaps starter Trent Szkutnik (W, 1-0) scattered three hits and a walk across six frames. He fanned six. Gabe Speier followed with two scoreless innings of relief.

Fort Wayne (2-6) had Franmil Reyes up as the tying run with two outs in the ninth inning after singles by Cordero and Nick Torres. The right fielder had singled and walked earlier in the day, but grounded out to Shepherd at third to end the game. Gabe Hemmer (S, 1) worked the ninth inning for the save.

In the loss, Torres extended his hitting streak to eight games to begin the season. Wilson Santos twirled two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Kyle McGrath blanked the home team in the eighth.

The TinCaps conclude their three-game series against the Whitecaps on Monday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. Right-hander Ernesto Montas (1-0, 1.80) is slated to start for Fort Wayne against righty Fernando Perez (0-1, 0.00). The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app.
