USA Men’s Goalball team intends to make Turnstone & Fort Wayne their residence
(February 25, 2015) – The United States Association of Blind Athletes, a member organization of the U.S. Olympic Committee and Turnstone are bringing the Olympic and Paralympic movement to Fort Wayne.
USABA Mission: To enhance the lives of children, youth, adults and Veterans who are blind and visually impaired through competitive sport, recreation and physical activity.Goalball: A team sport played nationally and internationally by athletes with visual impairments.
USA National Team Success: 2014 International Blind Sports Federation Goalball World Championships – USA Women’s National Team – World Champions – USA Men’s National Team – Bronze Medal – Only nation to qualify both teams for 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
USABA & Turnstone Partnership: USABA, through a long-term strategic partnership, is creating a resident athlete program in Fort Wayne for the USA Men’s Goalball National & Development Programs. Through this partnership, Turnstone will be one step closer to our goal of becoming a designated U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Site.
“The U.S. Association of Blind Athletes is excited to establish a residence program for the Men’s National Goalball Team in Ft. Wayne, IN which further enhances opportunities for future Paralympic Goalball athletes and the further development of the sport of Goalball in the United States”, said Mark Lucas Executive Director.
“This ground breaking partnership with Turnstone will allow blind and visually impaired athletes the opportunity to pursue excellence both on the goalball court and in the outstanding community of Ft. Wayne, “said Lucas.
These athletes will become part of the Turnstone family as well as part of Fort Wayne. They will be working, going to school and volunteering in our community.
“This partnership will be a great opportunity to bring a new sport to Fort Wayne and start attracting national recognition for Fort Wayne and Turnstone. These athletes are among those elite Paralympic athletes and we are excited to welcome them to Turnstone and Fort Wayne,” said Turnstone CEO Mike Mushett.
