General Motors/ UAW 2209 Named the Indiana Association of United Way’s 2015 Volunteer of the Year for Allen County
(March 6, 2014) – General Motors Fort Wayne Truck Assembly Plant and UAW Local 2209 were honored as the Indiana Association of United Way’s 2015 Volunteer of the Year for Allen County at an awards banquet held last night at the Westin in Indianapolis.
General Motors Fort Wayne Truck Assembly Plant and UAW Local 2209 were chosen for the award because of their outstanding support of United Way of Allen County and the AFL-CIO Community Services Program. Their employees volunteered for the Letter Carriers Food Drive, the Community Health Fair, two of United Way’s local reading programs, a picnic for clients of partner agency Turnstone and the Annual Day of Caring.
For their Day of Caring project, thirty-nine members of UAW 2209 built a privacy fence for Safe Haven, a local veteran’s shelter. The privacy fence greatly benefits their clients, who can now enjoy the fresh air and outdoor space, which is very important for veterans with PTSD. Even though the project was too large to be completed in one day, the volunteers gladly accepted the task and returned on the weekend to complete the fence.
GM employees provided more than 500 volunteer hours in 2014 to Allen County. UAW 2209 also provides leadership to United Way of Allen County through three active, retired members that participate on the Investment Team and Board of Directors.
