News release from the Fort Wayne Dance Collective:

Dayton Contemporary Dance Company
African-American dance troupe to take center stage

(March 6, 2015) — Experience a powerful, groundbreaking performance through the lens of contemporary dance as Dayton Contemporary Dance Company’s takes the stage, March 21 at the Arts United Center, 300 East Main Street.

For the past twenty-four years Fort Wayne Dance Collective has brought a guest dance company to Fort Wayne to inspire, educate, entertain, and enhance the community. This year the organization is pleased to welcome Dayton Contemporary Dance Company (DCDC) from Dayton, OH. DCDC is the oldest modern dance company in Ohio and one of the largest companies of its kind between Chicago and New York. DCDC is culturally diverse company rooted in preserving and performing the choreography of African-American dance artists. Dayton Contemporary Dance Company as achieved wide recognition for its ability to present contemporary dance of the highest caliber to the broadest audience through exceptional performance and arts-integrated education.

This experience will be as much cultural as it is focused on dance. As a primarily African-American troupe, DCDC is a testimony to endurance against great odds. Their powerful dancers use movement to convey empathy, imagination, and the will to carry through. DCDC is as much about life as it is about art. The audience can expect powerful, artistic performances, and a diverse repertoire of works by world-class choreographers. The New York Times raves, “…a multicultural troupe that has a signature style rooted not so much in power as in speed, suppleness and intricacy” and “they (DCDC) rewrite major pages of the history of American choreography by dancing them.”

Advance tickets for this one night only performance are $25 for adults, $22 for students, and $20 for groups of 10+. Ticket prices at the door are $30 for adults and $27 for students. Tickets may be purchased through the Fort Wayne Dance Collective by calling 260.424.6574, or online at fwdc.org.

This performance complements an exhibit currently on display through March 15 at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Highlighting Dance Theatre of Harlem’s 40-plus year history, “Dance Theatre of Harlem: 40 Years of Firsts” celebrates the history and art of dance with 25 costumes and accessories, set pieces, documentary video excerpts, historical photographs and tour posters; and includes four dramatically-staged ballets that are iconic to the company. Dispelling the belief that those of African descent could not perform ballet, Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1969. It has since grown into a multi-cultural dance institution. See fwmoa.org for more information.
