Headwaters Park Ice Skating Rink closes for the season this weekend

(February 25, 2015) – The 12th season for the Headwaters Park Ice Skating Rink will conclude on Sunday March 1 at 8 PM. The rink will be dismantled and stored until next winter (opening date to be determined), and we will prepare the site for spring and summer activities, which begin in April.

This has been an exceptionally good season for the ice rink. Last Saturday, the rink broke the previous all time high of 26,106 skaters for a single season. The previous record occurred during the 2011-2012 season. This year, we are poised to surpass 27,000 skaters for the season, giving us a cumulative total of about 258,000 since the rink opened in November of 2003.

To celebrate this milestone and thank the citizens of Fort Wayne for supporting us, the admission fee will be waived on Sunday, March 1 for children and adults. We will be open that day from Noon until 8 PM. Skate rental fees of $2 will apply, but we allow guests to bring their own skates.

The rink has not raised rates since it opened in 2003. Thanks to a number of foundations, including the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne, the Auer Foundation, the Lincoln Financial Foundation, PNC Charitable Trusts, and the Lupke Family Foundation, we have kept rates low and offered a free skate day for children under 14 each Wednesday. There is no other ice rink like this within 100 miles. With the support of these foundations and the general public, we hope to continue this successful operation next season.
