Ivy Tech grants Distinguished Public Official Award to Brian Bosma, David Long
INDIANAPOLIS (February 11, 2015) – Ivy Tech Community College has granted Indiana Speaker of the House Brian Bosma and Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore David Long with this year’s Distinguished Public Official Award.
The awards were presented at the college’s Student Day at the Statehouse today, February 11. Bosma and Long were selected for their great leadership, commitment to higher education and making Indiana a better place to work, live and raise a family.“We are very appreciative of the efforts and dedication to Indiana both Speaker Bosma and President Pro Tempore Long have shown,” said Ivy Tech President Thomas J. Snyder. “They have been supportive of Ivy Tech and our students and the important role we as a Community College play in addressing the skills gap and rebuilding the middle class here in Indiana.”
Bosma has served as speaker of the House since 2010 and also served from 2004 to 2006. He represents House District 88 in the northeast portion of Marion County, southern portion of Hamilton County and western portion of Hancock County. He was first elected in 1986.
As Speaker of the 117th General Assembly, Bosma made sweeping changes to education reform through the House Republicans “Strengthen Indiana Plan.” During the 118th General Assembly, he worked to create a budget with fiscal integrity, expanding educational opportunities and providing more opportunities for job creation by addressing the skills gap.
Bosma is also a partner with the law firm of Kroger, Gardis and Regas, focusing his practice in the areas of local government and environmental law. He was a founding Director of Bosma Industries for the Blind, Inc. which today employs over 85 blind and visually impaired Hoosiers of Central Indiana. He is a graduate of Purdue’s School of Engineering and the Indiana University School of Law.
Long has served in the Indiana State Senate since 1996 and represents Senate District 16 that includes portions of Allen County. He is Chair of the Rules and Legislative Procedure Committee and past chair of the Corrections, Criminal and Civic Matters Committee, and Insurance Sub-Committee.
He serves as General Counsel for Pizza Hut of Greater Fort Wayne, Inc. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Davis and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Santa Clara. He has also attended Wabash College. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Boys and Girls Club of Fort Wayne and on the Board of Directors for the Lincoln Museum.
