Winter Travel WATCH issued for Allen County

News release from the Allen County Office of Homeland Security:

Winter Travel WATCH Issued for Allen County

(February 1, 2015) – The Allen County Office of Homeland Security has issued a winter travel WATCH for all of Allen County, in effect until further notice. The issuance was made following consultation with the Allen County Highway Department and Allen County Sheriff’s Office.

A WATCH means that conditions are threatening to the safety of the public. During a WATCH, only essential travel, such as to and from work or in emergency situations is recommended. Drivers should be aware that conditions are hazardous. Please drive slowly and have emergency supplies in vehicles, along with a cell phone. Motorists should stay off the roads if possible so that highway crews can proceed with the snow removal process.

Blowing and drifting snow are expected to make travel difficult overnight into the early morning hours. Additionally, visibilities will be reduced to near zero at times in snow and blowing snow.

If traveling on highways is necessary, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security advises motorists to put together a travel kit or check supplies they already have. Among the items which should be included are:

  • Bottled water
  • Shovel
  • Sand or kitty litter
  • Extra blankets
  • A hand crank flashlight or battery powered flashlight with extra batteries
  • Booster (jumper) cables
  • Chargers for cell phones and mobile devices
  • Nonperishable food
  • First-aid kit
