St. Joseph Regional Burn Center Continues to Champion Awareness as it Begins its Fifth Decade of Service
Burn patient shares heroic story on cusp of Burn Awareness Week(January 19, 2015) – St. Joseph Hospital has been home to the St. Joseph Regional Burn Center for more than 40 years. As part of Burn Awareness Week, observed nationally this year Feb. 1-7, Fred Adrian, a Michigan City resident, has agreed to share his story and his experience as a burn patient.
Just six weeks ago, Adrian received burns to 25 percent of his body while saving his two-year-old son from a house fire.
Adrian’s son was also cared for at the Burn Center. Pediatric patients account for nearly one-third of total inpatient burn cases at St. Joe.
The St. Joseph Regional Burn Center is the region’s only verified burn center and one of only three in the state of Indiana. There are just 127 in the entire country. The Burn Center is verified by the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association.
The annual observance of Burn Awareness Week is one way to remind the public to stay vigilant in safety practices around anything that can cause burns including extreme heat or cold, open flames, accelerants, coals, and recently extinguished heating sources like space heaters or ovens.
