Mayor Henry to seek re-election
(January 6, 2015) – Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry today announced he will seek re-election as Mayor of the City of Fort Wayne.
Mayor Henry was joined by a crowd of supporters at Bergstaff Place near downtown Fort Wayne as he discussed his vision for Fort Wayne’s future.
“I continue to be encouraged by the impressive progress we’re experiencing in our City,” said Mayor Henry. “We’re moving in the right direction. I want to continue to serve as your Mayor so we can finish the proactive efforts that we’ve led to enhance job and business growth, revitalize our downtown, build strong neighborhoods, and provide the quality of life amenities that make our community unique and attractive.”
Highlights of City of Fort Wayne accomplishments led by Mayor Henry:
- Completion of the Harrison Square downtown development (Parkview Field, Courtyard by Marriott hotel, and The Harrison)
- Light Lease Settlement between the City of Fort Wayne and Indiana Michigan Power
- Creation of the Legacy fund to provide catalytic investment, leverage additional resources, and benefit residents. The fund is expected to grow to nearly $100 million at the end of 2025.
- Purchase of Aqua Indiana’s southwest water utility
- Ash Skyline Plaza downtown development project
- Fort Wayne is a leader in economic development. Since 2011, 104 companies have expanded, 16 new companies made Fort Wayne home, 101,000 jobs were retained, 5,100 jobs were created, and there was a total private investment of more than $960 million.
- A commitment to public safety, which has included multiple academy classes for the Fort Wayne Police and Fire departments, enhanced technology, and a 70% reduction in the number of homicides in 2014
- The first-ever Riverfront Development Study will be presented to the public in February
- The successful merger of Fort Wayne and Allen County 911 communications services
- Expansion of the 311 call center to provide efficient and effective services to residents and businesses
- The SmartGov initiative, using new methods and technologies to make government more open, effective and responsive
- Creation of the Fiscal Policy Group that resulted in additional funding for more police officers and firefighters, maintenance projects throughout the Parks and Recreation system, and a record amount of infrastructure improvement projects in all four quadrants of the City that totaled over $20 million in 2014.
“I envision a Fort Wayne where we’re committed to engagement, innovation, and performance to be a leader in providing excellent services,” said Mayor Henry. “We’re making a name for ourselves. I want our City to be a destination place where other communities compare themselves to us. We must keep going. We can’t stop and be passed by. We’re working together to make a meaningful difference to move Fort Wayne forward in a positive direction.”
A Fort Wayne native, Henry has been mayor of Indiana’s second-largest city since 2008. He served as a Fort Wayne City Councilman from 1984-2003.
He began his career in the private sector as CEO of a group purchasing organization serving hospitals. He then went on to become a successful small business owner of a local insurance agency and healthcare consulting firm.
A 1970 graduate of Fort Wayne Central Catholic High School, Henry earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and his MBA from the University of Saint Francis and served his country in the United States Army.
Henry is married to Cindy Henry and has two grown children and two grandchildren.
