Fort Wayne Dance Collective’s Artistic Director, Liz Monnier, Leaving in June 2015
(December 15, 2014) – Founding member and artistic director Liz Monnier of the Fort Wayne Dance Collective has announced she will be leaving her position effective June 30, 2015.

“I could probably work with the Fort Wayne Dance Collective for the rest of my life but I don’t want to overstay my welcome,” says Monnier jokingly. Since Fall 2011 she has been attending a training in the Feldenkrais Method®, traveling to Seattle, WA eight weeks a year and will graduate in May 2015 having fulfilled the 800 hours required to be certified. Liz says, “this method recognizes an individuals movement patterns and how through awareness, those patterns can be modified to be more efficient and functional. It’s like dancing from the inside out. It has opened a whole new world for me of looking at motion and how I can help those with pain and movement difficulties.”
Thinking through her intention to open a private practice as a Feldenkrais Practitioner, Monnier alerted the FWDC board of directors earlier this year. She made the announcement to the Fort Wayne Dance Collective family during their annual Nuts and Crackers performance on December 14, 2014. Liz wants to continue to teach with the Fort Wayne Dance Collective and to support the organization in new and various ways. “I’d like to become a taiko drummer and maybe try belly dance and I love working backstage.”
“As we look back at the legacy Liz has left for the Fort Wayne Dance Collective, and we take time to thank Liz for her many years of service, we also look forward to the next 35 years, knowing that the Fort Wayne Dance Collective has and will find new artistic individuals who are committed to the mission of this organization,” says Kate Brogan, FWDC board president.
In 1991 and 1993 Liz Monnier was awarded artist fellowships from Arts United and in 1993 she served as a Fort Wayne representative for a Sister City delegation in Plock, Poland. In 2003 Liz was awarded the Margaret Ann Keegan Award from Arts United for her on-going curriculum development of movement programs for physically and mentally challenged individuals. During 2002-2003 she served on the Dance Standards Committee for the Indiana Department of Education. In 2003 she was awarded a Gene Wyall Award for her excellence in producing video programs for public access television. During 2006 Indiana University presented Liz with a John Endwright Distinguished Alumni Service Award.
The board of directors has formed a search committee and will post the position in late January. The goal is to hire an artistic director who will continue the Fort Wayne Dance Collective’s mission and outreach with respect to the non-traditional dancer while moving the organization forward.
