The Embassy Festival of Trees celebrates 30 Years
(November 13, 2014) – It was in 1984 that Maryellen Rice, a member of the Embassy Theatre’s board of directors was trying to think of a fundraiser. She asked her neighbor, general manager of WPTA-TV, Barb Wigham for an idea and Barb recalled a festival of trees she had attended in Pennsylvania. That idea was a hit and the first festival was held at the Embassy in 1985 and quickly became a Fort Wayne tradition. The Festival of Trees theme for this year is 30 Years of Holiday Cheer.
The Festival of Trees 30 years later is much like the first with live entertainment on the stage from local performance groups, children visiting Santa and Mrs. Claus in Santa Land and everyone enjoying trees with themes like “Alice at the Embassy,” “Cardinals in the Snow” to “Stille Nacht” and “Frozen fun with friends Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff.” The traditional Breakfast with Santa event on Nov. 28, 29 and 30 at 9:30 a.m. features breakfast on stage, Santa Claus sing-a-long, Mrs. Claus story time and a magic show by Ronald McDonald. Please note that Breakfast with Santa is sold out.
The animated holiday windows along Harrison Street will feature historical animated characters and some brand new ones to illustrate the story of Merry Mouse and her journey to the North Pole to become one of Santa’s toy makers. The windows will be unveiled during Night of Lights on Nov. 26 and continue through Jan. 1, 2015.
Children can get their picture taken with characters from the movie “Frozen,” Icy Eagle and the Mad Ant during Night of Lights on Nov. 26 and again on Tots & Trees Day, Dec. 3.
The schedule for the 30th annual Festival of Trees is Nov. 26, 6 9 p.m., Nov. 27, Thanksgiving Day, 4-8 p.m., Nov. 28, 29, 30 from 12-8 p.m., Dec. 1, 2 and 3, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Additional details can be found online at www.fwembassytheatre.org.
