MKM architecture + design Project, Partner and Client Combine to Receive Three AIA Awards

(October 14, 2014) – MKM architecture + design (MKM) proudly received a Merit Design Award for the Bloomington Lifetime Communities District (LCD) from the Fort Wayne Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) on October 1, 2014. The work was done on behalf of Indiana University’s Center on Aging and Community. This study explored how the existing “B-Line” pedestrian trail running through the heart of downtown Bloomington could be used to create a model district for the “Communities for a Lifetime” initiative emerging throughout Indiana. Charged with creating a neighborhood designed to engage people of all ages and abilities, this study focused on tangible strategies that reacted to local issues and specific development hurdles within the community.

Additionally, MKM partner, Zachary Benedict, AIA, LEED AP, received the distinguished Juliet Peddle Award from the Indiana Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) on October 3, 2014. Created in 1999, this award is named after the first female registered architect in Indiana, Juliet Peddle (1899-1979). The Juliet Peddle Award recognizes an individual architect for their strong willingness to pioneer, being successful in breaking new ground, strong devotion and commitment to architecture, display of professionalism and perseverance, and having a kind spirit.

Also on October 3rd, MKM client, Phil Stafford, Ph.D., Director of Indiana University’s Center on Aging and Community was honored with the Walter S. Blackburn Award from the Indiana Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Originally created as the Don E. Gibson Award and renamed in 2000 in recognition and honor of Walter S. Blackburn, FAIA, this award is bestowed upon a non-architect public member or organization that has contributed their time and person in service to or support of the architectural profession in Indiana, or an architect and member of AIA Indiana who has exemplified professional and public service as Blackburn did. Their commitment to the profession, community and professional service, and support of the architectural profession in Indiana must be self-evident.
