News release from the Allen County Treasurer’s Office:

Local Banks Will No Longer Be Accepting Property Tax Payments

(September 19, 2014) – The Allen County Treasurer’s office announced that due to changes in how payments are collected and processed at some local banks the Treasurer’s office would be unable to meet statutory deadlines for its payment processing. Therefore, the decision has been made to no longer use local banks as payment points for property taxes. Changes in the banks internal controls changed the way they processed third party vendors which included tax collection.

“Our processing time for payments jumped from one week to two and a half months this past spring.” Stated Treasurer Susan Orth. “We have deadlines mandated by state law that we have to meet to have a timely settlement and get funds out to the units of government. The processing change made those deadlines impossible to meet.”

Paying property taxes at local banks was only one payment option. There are many other options and taxpayers are encouraged to select that payment method that would work best for them. Payment options include the following:

  • Mail payments to the Allen County Treasurer, PO Box 2540, Fort Wayne, IN, 46802. Payments must be postmarked by the tax due date.
  • Payments may be made in person at the Treasurer’s office, Rousseau Centre, 1 East Main Street, Suite 104.
  • Pay online, or setup a monthly payment plan or have payments drawn twice a year automatically on tax due day at www.allencounty.us/treasurers-office. This is a free service.
  • Credit card payments can also be made online but a fee is charged for this service.
  • Use the self-pay kiosk located just outside the Treasurer’s office or put payment in the drop slot.
  • Drop payments in the drop box located on Main Street on the south side of the courthouse.

“We have always looked for convenient ways for taxpayers to pay their taxes,” said Orth, “and we are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause for some, but I have to stay in compliance with state law.”

The next due date for property taxes is November 10. Those who choose to pay in person are encouraged not to wait until the last day to pay to avoid long lines. Questions about payment options or for help with online payments, call the Treasurer’s office at 260.449.7693.
