Cape Ann art tradition subject of USF Closer Look lecture
(August 14, 2014) — The history of the Cape Ann, Massachusetts, art colony and the artists who painted there will be explored by “plein air,” or “open air” artist and collector Douglas Runyan on Wednesday, Sept. 10 as part of the Closer Look lecture series at the University of Saint Francis (USF). The free public lecture, “Cape Ann Collection Connections,” will be offered at 7:30 p.m. in the North Campus auditorium at 2702 Spring St.
Runyan will present a view of the seaside art colony as it developed and grew in the 20th century. His presentation will focus on several prominent artists who worked in Cape Ann and the art they created, primarily in the plein air painting tradition favored by impressionist painters. He will note several works in the exhibition from his art collection and from the collections of Fred Doloresco and Lisa Gilman. He will also discuss the connections to the Brown County, Indiana, art colony which resulted in his interest in Cape Ann as an artist and collector.
Dr. Elizabeth Kuebler-Wolf, assistant professor of art history at the USF School of Creative Arts, will present an introduction to the lecture focusing on the historic tradition of Cape Ann artists such as Fritz Hugh Lane, Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, Frank Duveneck and, most notably, Edward Hopper.
