News release from the American Heart Association:

Building a healthier northeast Indiana 1 step at a time

(August 11, 2014) – The American Heart Association is building healthier lives in Northeast Indiana through the annual Heart Walk on Saturday, September 13, 2014, 8:00 a.m at Ivy Tech’s North Campus, located at 3701 Dean Drive, which is one block north of Stellhorn, off of St. Joe Road.

The non-competitive, one and three mile walk raises funds to support heart disease and stroke research and programs in the Northeast Indiana area. Funds are raised by companies and community teams throughout the summer and culminate with the walk. The community raised more than $171,000 last year and those funds are invested in the region each year to support education, advocacy, research and community outreach.

Cardiovascular disease and stroke are the country’s number 1 and number 4 killers. Brisk walking for as little as 30 minutes a day has proven health benefits, such as providing increased energy and circulation, as well as reduced risk of heart disease. The Heart Walk is designed to help participants understand this critical message, join with others and generate a renewed commitment to heart-healthy living through walking.

Jeff Potter, president of the 2014 NBA Development League champion Fort Wayne Mad Ants is this year’s Heart Walk Chairman and is leading the organizational and recruitment efforts for the region.

“Seeing residents that are heart or stroke survivors and beneficiaries of donations to heart and stroke research is why I believe in the work of the AHA and why I decided to become chair of this year’s Heart Walk,” said Potter. “The Mad Ants are proud to support the Heart Walk. It’s the perfect way to share our commitment to the total health of our workforce and the community, through heart-healthy exercise.”

As Chairman of this year’s walk, Jeff Potter will call on hundreds of area volunteers, survivors, walkers, and business leaders to step up to help reduce disability and death from cardiovascular disease and stroke and spread the lifesaving message of the American Heart Association.

The Northeast Indiana Heart Walk will also feature a family-friendly health festival that includes food, games, giveaways, entertainment and much more.

The Heart Walks are nationally sponsored by SUBWAY Restaurants. Local sponsors are PHP, Lutheran Health Network, Mad Ants, Ivy Tech Community College, and American Senior Communities among other generous companies.
