Molecules, fall shut down, and “Be A Tourist” day highlight Science Central August and September activities
(July 24, 2014) – Science Central, the region’s premier gateway for informal science education, has slated the following activities for August and September 2014:
Sunday, August 17, 2014 – Science Central at the Indiana State Fair, Indianapolis
Science Central will be a featured attraction in the Indiana Office of Tourism Development booth at the Indiana State Fair on Sunday, August 17, from 10 a.m. – 4p.m. Visit the booth to see Science Central’s Outreach to Space exhibit, an interactive, hands-on exhibit funded by the Indiana Space Grant Consortium that teaches about planets and space. Science Central coupons will also be available at the booth, which will be located in Exposition Hall on the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
Saturday, August 23, 2014 – Science Central at Taste of the Arts Festival, Freimann Square
As part of the Arts United Taste of the Arts Festival, Science Central will offer hands-on science activities for children, on Saturday, August 23 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., in Freimann Square. All activities are FREE.
Now – August 17, 2014 – Science Central Summer Hours in effect
Science Central summer operating hours are currently in effect, offering extended days and times for visiting the popular hands-on science center. Science Central is open Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sundays from 12 noon-5 p.m., through August 17, 2014.
August 20, 2014 – Science Central School Year Hours take effect
Science Central school year hours will resume on Wednesday, September 20, 2014. During the school year, Science Central is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and is open Wednesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays, noon-5 p.m.
August 30, 2014 – “Last Saturday,” 10 am-5 pm
Science Central will offer half-price admission to visitors as part of the Downtown Improvement District’s Last Saturday event on August 30th. Science Central’s normal admission cost is $8 per person, 3-65; and free for ages 2 and under. On “Last Saturday,” admission will be just $4 per person; $3.50 for ages 66+.
Now – September 7, 2014 – “In The Dark” Traveling Exhibition on display
What happens when night falls? Don’t think the whole world goes to sleep, as you’ll learn in this dynamic exhibit developed by the Cincinnati Museum Center. Visitors can explore different environments of darkness and the life forms that inhabit them in this exciting exhibit that features both hands-on and whole body interactive displays, walk-through dioramas, and specimens. You’ll wander through a nocturnal forest, explore a cave, and take the plunge to explore life under the sea. The exhibit will be available for viewing at Science Central through September 7, 2014.
September 1-September 12, 2014 – Science Central Fall Shutdown (weekdays only)
Science Central will close for its annual fall shutdown to perform exhibit and building maintenance, beginning Monday, September 1 through Friday, September 5; and from Monday, September 8, to Friday, September 12. The science center will be open for normal business hours on Saturdays and Sundays, September 6 & 7 and September 13 and 14.
September 7, 2014 – Be A Tourist In Your Own Hometown Day
In conjunction with Visit Fort Wayne’s “Be a Tourist In Your Own Hometown Day,” Science Central will offer free admission to visitors from 12 noon-5 p.m. Visitors will be admitted free to the center with a valid event “passport.” Passports will be available three weeks prior to the event at Kroger and Old National Bank locations around Fort Wayne. September 20, 2014 – January 4, 2015 – “Marvelous Molecules: The Secret of Life” Traveling Exhibition
“Marvelous Molecules: The Secret of Life,” Science Central’s next traveling exhibition, will offer visitors a unique look at the workings of molecules during its run from September 20, 2014 through January 4, 2015. Amoebas, crabs, willow trees, elephants, whales and people all look different on the outside, but inside, each contains billions and billions of molecules that interact in similar ways to carry out common life functions—moving, sensing, defending and reproducing. Likewise, the variety of different molecules found in living things is vast, but these molecules are all based on combinations of only 25 different atoms.The exhibition includes a series of exhibit stations, computer interactive activities, and hands-on models, that invite visitors to explore how and why these different interactions happen by breaking life down into smaller and smaller parts and revealing the similarities and differences among life forms in this world. The exhibition was developed by the New York Hall of Science.
