Fort Wayne’s Win Streak Comes to an End
(August 6, 2014) – The TinCaps’ four-game win streak came to an end Wednesday afternoon against the Lansing Lugnuts in a 7-0 loss at Parkview Field. Despite the setback, Fort Wayne still won the three-game series and has been victorious in 10 of its last 14 games.
Lansing (20-25, 52-62) received a sterling start from Starlyn Suriel, who shined for six innings. In only his fourth appearance in the Midwest League since being called up from Short-Season A Vancouver last month, the 20-year-old right-hander allowed just one base runner. Suriel (1-1) was perfect for four innings before Jake Bauers singled in the fifth.
By that point, the TinCaps were behind 2-0. The Lugnuts scored the game’s first run in the top of the third inning with two outs. Like Suriel, Fort Wayne (21-24, 51-63) starter Ronald Herrera retired the first eight batters he faced before conceding a single to Daniel Klein.
Ian Parmley then bunted down the third-base line for a hit, but Herrera (5-7) exacerbated the issue by throwing the ball wildly to first base, moving Klein to third and Parmley to second. Derrick Loveless came up and ripped a line drive back to the mound which went off the right-hander’s glove and allowed Klein to score what would eventually stand as the game-winning run.
A Justin Atkinson sacrifice fly in the fourth inning gave the visitors a 2-0 edge. The Lugs added another unearned run against reliever Erik Cabrera in the seventh, and broke the game open with a four-run ninth.
The TinCaps were limited to three hits — and three base runners total — on the day. Suriel threw 77 pitches and allowed only Bauers’ single while striking out three.
Fort Wayne remains at home to open a four-game series against the Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Jimmi Brasoban is scheduled to start for the TinCaps against Midwest League All-Star Jordan Milbrath.
