News release from the City of Fort Wayne:
City hosts state’s Public Access Counselor for open meetings, public records workshop July 30
Free event open to public to discuss Indiana’s public access laws(July 22, 2014) – The City of Fort Wayne is bringing Indiana’s public access counselor, Luke Britt, to give a public presentation about the state’s public access laws at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 30 in the Omni Room in the lower level of Citizens Square. Britt will cover the requirements and responsibilities of local government and the public for Indiana’s Open Meetings Law and Access to Public Records Act.
“As the mayor of Indiana’s second-largest city, I am committed to openness and transparency in conducting the public’s business here at the City of Fort Wayne,” said Mayor Tom Henry. “We have put unprecedented amounts of data on the City’s website during my time in office, which allows anyone access to this information at any time. This session with the public access counselor is an opportunity for members of the public to have a better understanding of these laws that cover local government’s actions.”
Appointed by Gov. Mike Pence in 2013, Britt is an attorney who provides advice, assistance and education about public access laws to the public and state and local government entities. His office also issues advisory opinions about public records and open meetings. Gov. Frank O’Bannon created the Public Access Counselor office in 1998 via executive order, which the General Assembly then statutorily enacted in 1999.
The event is free and open to the public. No reservation is required. City TV will tape the meeting to be broadcast on cable access and available through the Access Fort Wayne website.
