News release from the Allen County SPCA:

Man saves life of trapped kitten

(June 26, 2014) – During his routine morning walk on Monday, a good Samaritan spotted something in the middle of North River Road in New Haven, IN. Upon further investigation it was a clear plastic, zippered bag – similar to packaging for new bedding – with three tiny kittens trapped inside. The bag had been run over by a vehicle, and only one kitten was alive. The lone survivor, now named Mercy, was brought to the Allen County SPCA along with her deceased littermates.

Mercy, who is too young to be spayed, was examined, determined to be healthy, and is now residing in a foster home until she’s ready for adoption. Her littermates were transported for cremation.

“We were really saddened by it,” said shelter director, Jessica Henry. “It is unfathomable that in this day and age, someone literally would trap those kittens with no way out, whatsoever, and allow them to suffer like that.” Henry continued, “It will be our honor to help Mercy find a loving forever home where she will always be safe and out of harm’s way.”

The Allen County SPCA implores anyone unwilling or unable to care for any animal of any age to please seek humane alternatives for placement. Citizens are urged to contact Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control or the Allen County SPCA for assistance with unwanted pets.

New Haven Police were contacted, but there were no witnesses to the incident. If you have information, please contact the New Haven Police Department at (260) 493-1517.
