Free Camp Gives Area Students Experience in High-Demand Healthcare Careers
(May 30, 2014) — Students going into grades 8-12 can explore five high-demand healthcare career fields at the Dental Education, Nursing, and Radiology (DENR) exploration camp, happening July 7-18 on the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) campus.
The DENR camp is open to students enrolled in grades 8-12 for the fall of 2014 and who live in Allen, Grant, or Huntington counties. There is no charge to attend the camp, but students must be able to attend all ten days. Camp space is limited to the first 30 students who register. The registration deadline is June 13.
According to US News and World Report, positions for registered nurses, radiologic technologists, and dental hygienists, assistants, and technicians will grow between 19% and 33% between now and 2022.
The DENR camp engages students in hands-on experiences, simulations, and classroom presentations about these jobs. The hands-on sessions include everything from tooth examinations and patient interactions to using germ lights and vacuum trays.
“Career exploration programs such as DENR engage students in science-related fields,” said Christopher Riley, assistant director of multicultural services, Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. “When students can ‘try out’ career experiences for themselves, it gets them excited about their possibilities and gives them goals to work toward. That’s why ODMA fosters these programs.”
Sponsors of the DENR camp include the Area Health Education Center: Northeast Indiana, the IPFW Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, and the IPFW College of Health and Human Services.
