News release from the TinCaps:
Captains sweep TinCaps with 10-3 win
EASTLAKE, Ohio (May 21, 2014) – For the first time since 2011, the Fort Wayne TinCaps have lost seven straight games. With a 10-3 loss at Lake County Wednesday afternoon, the TinCaps wrapped up a seven-game road trip with their seventh straight loss.
Fort Wayne (17-28) fell behind 2-0 in the second inning on a two-run double by Claudio Bautista. The Lake County (16-30 ) second baseman was a rather vexatious presence throughout the course of the three-game series, as he knocked in five runs over three games and picked up nine hits.
Captains starter Robbie Aviles continued to look like one of the best pitchers in the Midwest League this season. The New York native entered the day with the circuit’s lowest ERA (1.23) and WHIP (0.85) and only saw it drop through the first four frames as he held the TinCaps scoreless.
Fort Wayne finally generated some offense in the top of the fifth when Jake Bauers – the only TinCap to register a multi-hit game Wednesday – led off with a ground rule double. Bauers scored two batters later on a single by Henry Charles, which made it a 2-1 game. But that was as close as Fort Wayne would get.
In the bottom of the fifth, Captains shortstop Paul Hendrix clobbered a three-run home run to put the home team ahead 5-1. TinCaps right fielder Franmil Reyes responded with a two-run shot in the top of the sixth to bring Fort Wayne within two at 5-3. However, after Fort Wayne starter Walker Weickel left the game following the sixth inning, reliever Tony Wieber was tagged for five runs on seven hits in two innings of relief. On the other side, Aviles earned the win with a seven-inning performance.
Lake County out-hit Fort Wayne, 15-8. Wednesday was the first time during the TinCaps’ losing streak that the team never had a lead and lost by more than two runs.
The last time Fort Wayne dropped seven straight was April 16-23, 2011. The 2011 season was also the last time the TinCaps were 11-games below .500. The Summit City squad had a low-water record of 38-51 that July before winning six games in a row and concluding the regular season with a 31-19 record to clinch a playoff berth.
The TinCaps return home Thursday to open a six-game homestand. Thursday’s 7:05 first pitch against the Lansing Lugnuts will have Adrian De Horta on the mound for Fort Wayne and Alberto Tirado pitching for the Lugnuts. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
