Aviation Scholarships Awarded to Local High School Seniors
(May 16, 2014) – The Greater FortWayne Aviation Museum is proud to announce the 2014 Jim Kelley Memorial Scholarship recipients: Grant Nill of Bishop Dwenger High School, Nicholas Steffen of Bishop Luers High School and, on behalf of Fort Wayne International Airport and Smith Field Airport, Megan Ley of East Noble High School; Jessica Cordes and Cassandra Crawford of Garrett High School. All winners will receive a $1,500 scholarship to pursue a career in an aviationrelated field.
The Jim Kelley Memorial Scholarship was created in 2006 in memory of Jim Kelley, a local entrepreneur and champion of aviation in Northeast Indiana. The scholarship is open to high school seniors planning to pursue an aviation-related degree at an accredited college or university or those enrolled in the Airframe & Powerplant (A & P) Certification program at Ivy Tech Community College, located at Smith Field Airport. To be eligible, students must submit their GPA, an essay, and one recommendation.
“The Airport Authority values its commitment to education,” said Scott Hinderman, Executive Director of Airports. “Building the region’s aviation community is important to us, and academics are a large part of that effort. We are delighted to aid these students in their journey and know that each will excel in their careers.”
Nill plans to study aeronautical engineering at Purdue University and continue professional flight training. Steffen will attend Purdue University studying for a career as a pilot or aeronautical engineer. Ley will be pursuing her goal of becoming an air traffic controller at Purdue University. Cordes and Crawford are currently enrolled at Garrett High School and taking A & P classes at Ivy Tech to become aviation mechanics.
“As co-founder of the Greater FortWayne Aviation Museum, and an accomplished pilot, my father would be gratified to have these outstanding students continue his legacy,” said Barbara Kelley Kraegel, member of the Greater Fort Wayne Aviation Museum.
