TinCaps Complete Sweep of Captains

(May 14, 2014) – On a wet Wednesday afternoon, the TinCaps beat the Lake County Captains, 8-6, in front of a Parkview Field season-high crowd of 7,312. Fort Wayne fell behind 4-1 early, but came back to win their third in a row, and complete a series sweep of Lake County in the process.

A five-run bottom of the third inning for the TinCaps turned a three-run deficit into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Down 4-1 entering the frame, Franmil Reyes delivered an RBI-single and Jake Bauers hit a two-run ground rule double to tie the game. Fort Wayne went in front, 6-4, when two runs scored on a throwing error by Lake County (11-28) first baseman Nellie Rodriguez.

The TinCaps did that damage against Captains starter Adam Plutko (2-1), who was coming off an eight-inning, 13-strikeout, no-runs-allowed effort in his last start. The UCLA alum and reigning College World Series Most Outstanding Player allowed seven runs on 11 hits.

Fort Wayne (17-21) starter Coby Cowgill wasn’t very effective in the rain either. Cowgill walked six and gave up three hits in two innings, as he was charged with four runs. A collective effort out of the bullpen from Justin Livengood (2.0 IP, 1 R), Tayron Guerrero (2.0 IP, 0 R), Eric Yardley (1.1 IP, 1 R), and Nick Mutz (0.2 IP, 0 R) helped garner the victory. Guerrero (3-0) was most impressive as he struck out four and received credit for the win, while Mutz picked up the save. The game ended after eight innings due to rain.

In 24 innings at the plate in the series, the TinCaps scored 25 runs on 33 hits. Wednesday featured another balanced attack. Seven of Fort Wayne’s nine hitters had at least one hit. Five different players contributed two.
The TinCaps look to extend their winning streak to four games on Thursday at South Bend. Walker Weickel is scheduled to start for Fort Wayne against the Silver Hawks’ Adam Miller. The 7:05 p.m. game can be heard on The Fan 1380, TheFanFortWayne.com, and the TuneIn Radio app.
