TinCaps Lose to Silver Hawks

(May 4, 2014) – The TinCaps lost to the South Bend Silver Hawks, 16-2, on Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field.

Fort Wayne (12-17) trailed 5-0 before getting to bat and South Bend (17-13) put two more runs up in the top of the second inning. The Silver Hawks took total control with an eight-run fourth, and padded the lead with another run in the eighth.

The TinCaps scored their only runs in the bottom of the third inning. Mallex Smith scored Ronnie Richardson with an RBI-single. Dustin Peterson then drove in Smith on a sacrifice fly after Smith stole both second and third base. At the time, it cut Fort Wayne’s deficit to 7-2.

Against six TinCaps hurlers — five pitchers and an outfielder in Richardson, who worked a scoreless ninth — the Silver Hawks carved out 16 hits. Starter Bryan Verbitsky (0-1) conceded seven runs (six earned) in two innings pitched.

South Bend (17-13) third baseman Joe Munoz doubled in each of his first four at-bats. Munoz’s four doubles tied a Midwest League record for an individual player. As a team, the Silver Hawks had nine doubles — one shy of a league record.

After a 3-4 homestand, the TinCaps begin a six-game road trip Monday night at 7:05 at Lansing. Left-hander Payton Baskette starts for Fort Wayne against Lansing righty Tom Robson. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380.
