Bees Freeze TinCaps in Snow-Shortened Game

(April 14, 2014) – The night at Parkview Field began with rain and concluded with snow, some of which stung, but no precipitation struck as sharply as the Burlington Bees on Monday. The Bees, visiting Fort Wayne for the first time in two years, defeated the TinCaps, 4-2, in a show-shortened, six-and-a-half-inning contest to open a three-game series.

The Fort Wayne (3-7) offense began to strike in the second inning, just around the same time the skies opened and rain began to fall. Franchy Cordero hit a bouncing single up the middle to score Fernando Perez, giving the TinCaps a 1-0 lead against Burlington (6-4) starter Harrison Cooney (2-0)

The Bees had an immediate response in the top of the third, as Mark Shannon hit a run-scoring double down the first base line, knocking in Chad Hinshaw to tie the game. The Fort Wayne response was a bases-loaded groundout off the bat of Henry Charles, which did plate Luis Tejada, but the TinCaps mustered no further offense in the fourth.

De Horta’s night came to a close after four innings—he struck out six and walked only one in his Parkview Field debut—and the first man up was Tony Rizzotti. The Arlington, Texas, native allowed three of the first four batters he faced to reach base, with the third—Mark Shannon—clubbing a two-run double down the right field line. Burlington added another run, also against Rizzotti, in the seventh before the game was called due to snowy conditions.

The official time of the game was two hours, thirteen minutes, with a 30-minute delay.

The two clubs will square off again, perhaps in more favorable conditions for baseball, on Tuesday evening at 7:05. The scheduled starters are Walker Weickel for Fort Wayne and Ryan Etsell for Burlington. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
