Loons roll, 10-5, over TinCaps in finale

(April 6, 2014) – Another big inning by the Great Lakes Loons made back-to-back tough days for the Fort Wayne TinCaps, as they lost, 10-5, on Sunday evening at Parkview Field. The Loons poured on seven runs in the fourth inning, and went on to win the series three games to one.

TinCaps starter Jimmi Brasoban (0-1), making his Fort Wayne (1-3) debut, retired the first five batters he faced, but hit a rough patch in the third inning, facing seven batters and allowing three runs to score. In the fourth, the 19-year-old righthander gave up a leadoff double to catcher Webster Rivas, and allowed the first six batters of the inning to reach base before being removed from the game. Tony Rizzotti came out of the bullpen after three runs had already scored, but the former Tulane pitcher allowed four more on two-run hits by Paul Hoenecke and Justin Chigbogu, and the Loons led, 10-0, after four innings.

Great Lakes (3-1) starter Luis Chirinos (1-0) had held the TinCaps to one hit — a José Carlos Urena double — through the first four innings, until the offense started rolling in the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Luis Tejada and Rey Bruguera set the stage for a Mallex Smith RBI double, making it 10-1 in favor of the Loons. Three batters later, Franmil Reyes collected his first TinCaps hit, a two-run single.

The TinCaps did not score again until the eighth, tacking on one more run as Tejada singled home Dane Phillips.

Second-year TinCaps reliever Tayron Guerrero and Nick Mutz combined to retire the final eight batters of the game, limiting the opposition to one hit in the final three innings.

The Midwest League will have a league-wide off day on Monday, April 7th, before action resumes as the East meets the West on Tuesday, April 8th. The TinCaps will head to Geneva, Illinois, and face the Kane County Cougars, the league’s Cubs affiliate in a 7:30 ET game. The scheduled starters are Walker Lockett (0.00) for the TinCaps and Jen-Ho Tseng (0.00) for the Cougars. The game can be heard on the The FAN 1380 with Mike Couzens and John Nolan on the call.
