Science Fair recognition, shaving cream, and spring break camps highlight March activities at Science Central
(March 3, 2014) – Science Central, the region’s premier gateway for informal science education, has slated the following special activities for the month of March 2014:
Saturday, March 8, 2014 – Lunch with an IPFW Scientist, 11 am-12:30 pm
Go on a journey to learn how technology in a tiny world changes our lives. Join Dr. Abdullah Eroglu, Associate Professor of Engineering, as he explores real-life applications of nanotechnology, and find out what they do and how they work. Cost is $10 for Science Central members or $16 for non-members. The fee includes lunch. Pre-registration is required.Tuesday, March 11, 2014 – Half-Pint Science, 10-11:30 a.m.
Your little scientist will have fun playing “Games Galore” in this month’s Half-Pint Science program. We’ll mix colors in a shaving cream squish bag, play button sorting games, and make
I Spy games to take home, plus enjoy a snack. Cost is $12 for one child and one adult for non-members, $8 for members. Pre-registration is required.Tuesday, March 11, 2014 – Afternoon Science, 2-4 p.m.
Afternoon Science programs are designed to offer homeschool students an opportunity to spend an afternoon together participating in a scientific lab, a demonstration and exploring the exhibits. The March program will focus on materials science, and will feature a “Mineral Madness” demonstration. A “Hands Off!” lab will be held for ages 5-8; and ages 9-12 and 13-16 will participate in “Nanoscience” labs. Pre-registration is required.Sunday, March 23, 2014 – Science Fair Recognition Day, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
Not every student can be the champion of their school science fair, but every student that participates gains knowledge, skill and insights into science and technology. Science Central will salute those students who didn’t win their school’s science fair, but whose work nonetheless deserves recognition at Science Fair Recognition Day, Sunday, March 23, from 1-3 p.m. Admission to Science Central is $8, with children 2 and under free.Area schools are invited to select two students whose science fair projects displayed significant effort and success to participate in the Science Central event. Participating students will explain their projects to visitors, and provide explanations of their findings.
Saturday, March 29, 2014 – Last Saturday, 10 am-5 p.m.
Science Central will offer half-price admission to visitors as part of the Downtown Improvement District’s Last Saturday event on March 29th. Science Central’s normal admission cost is $8 per person, 3-65; $7 ages 66+; and free for ages 2 and under. On “Last Saturday,” admission will be just $4 per person; $3.50 for ages 66+.March 31-April 4 – Spring Break Camp at Science Central; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily
When schools close for Spring Break, Science Central presents Spring Break Camp to provide fun educational activities for kids from 5-11. Monday, March 31, will focus on “The Science of Storms,” utilizing Science Central’s newest exhibit, Science On a Sphere. Tuesday, April 1, will feature “Spy Training 101,” Wednesday, April 2 will feature “Fun Park Physics,” Thursday, April 3 will focus on “Grossology,” and Friday, April 4 features “Jurassic Journeys.”A week-long Technology Camp, “Science On a Sphere: Mission Design,” will give campers, ages 8-13, the opportunity to delve into computer programming to develop presentations for Science On a Sphere. The camp will run from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. daily.

Now – May 4, 2014 – “To ‘MyPlate’ and Beyond: Adventures in Healthy Eating” Traveling Exhibit
Science Central is serving up some healthy fare for visitors with its current traveling exhibition, “To MyPlate and Beyond.” Developed by Purdue University and presented in part by Heritage Food Service Group, Inc., the interactive exhibit illustrates the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s tool, MyPlate, emphasizing the five food groups that are part of a healthy diet: fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy. It is slated to appear at Science Central until May 4, 2014.
