Updated snowfall forecast for weekend winter storm
(March 1, 2014) – A winter storm is expected to impact the region this weekend. Snow will continue to overspread the area during the day on Saturday through Saturday evening and may be heavy at times overnight into Sunday. Widespread snowfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches are expected through 1 PM EST Sunday.
Recent model guidance has trended the heaviest snowfall south of the area after 1 PM EST Sunday. There is still some uncertainty with the exact placement of the heaviest snowfall from Sunday afternoon into Monday morning, as there will likely be a sharp gradient of snowfall amounts increasing from north to south.
Right now, an inch or less of snowfall is expected during this timeframe along and north of U.S. 6, while 1 to 3 inches of snowfall is possible along and north of the U.S. 24 corridor. Far southeast portions of the area have the greatest chances for the heavier snowfall from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning, where 2 to 4 inches of snowfall is forecast.
A winter storm watch remains in effect for southern portions of the area from 10 PM EST Saturday through 7 AM EST Monday.
