Tricky Weather This Weekend Could Lead to Flooding, Slick Road Conditions
Rain, above-and-below freezing temperatures and snow all forecasted for Northeast Indiana

(December 20, 2013) – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is warning drivers to be on the lookout for high water now, and potentially slick conditions later this weekend, due to changing weather patterns in the forecast.

Friday/Saturday: Significant snowfall from the past week is now melting because of the above-freezing temperatures, and several inches of rain forecasted through this weekend will increase the potential for high water on roadways.

INDOT crews will patrol state roads, and post high water signs or close roads as needed. But motorists need to practice extreme caution. If you come across a flooded roadway, turn around. Never drive through standing water. According to the National Weather Service, most flooding deaths occur in automobiles. Six inches of standing water is enough to stall a car, and a foot of water will float many vehicles.

Sunday/Monday: Temperatures are predicted to fall Sunday night and into Monday, increasing the chance for freezing on the roadways. Any roadway remaining wet from precipitation and areas of high water could become slick when temperatures again fall below freezing.

Freezing rain and ice are dangerous for all drivers, because they affect vehicles of all sizes. Don’t expect four-wheel-drive vehicles to have any advantage on slick roads.

INDOT crews are prepared to hit the road 24-7 to combat the high water, ice and snow, but drivers should plan ahead for difficult road conditions throughout the weekend. Know the conditions before you head out the door, and avoid non-essential travel when road conditions are difficult.

Drivers can monitor road conditions and traffic alerts across the state at any time.
