North Side Students Make Holidays Bright with Party for Kids Surviving Cancer

(December 4, 2013) – Students at North Side High School are getting ready for the school’s 27th annual Christmas Party for Kids Surviving Cancer, which will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at North Side, 475 E. State Blvd.

Preparing for the party includes raising money, making contacts with community members for donations, shopping for gifts for each child in every family attending, wrapping the gifts and organizing entertainment. Dozens of students from several student groups, including those focused on community service, as well as those connected to the arts and academics, participate in raising money for gifts and organizing the annual event.

Students will shop from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, at K-Mart on Coliseum Boulevard. The gifts will be wrapped from 3-4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at North Side.

Eighteen families are expected to participate in Sunday’s party. Entertainment includes performances by the North Side Show Choir, dance teams, orchestra and drama ensembles. Santa will also be present to hand out gifts.

“This is an event the staff and students at North Side look forward to every year,” said Mike Morris, who serves as the staff sponsor of the event. “Our students are excited to celebrate the true meaning of community and the importance of serving others, and they look forward to seeing families who attend year after year. This event not only provides cheer to the families and children, but for the North Side students as well. It is a great way to kick off the season of giving.”
