IPFW Resource Center Offers Events for Transgender Awareness Month
(November 12, 2013) – The Resource Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will be hosting two events in November as part of Transgender Awareness Month.
The first features a series of workshops open only to IPFW students, staff, and faculty. On Tuesday, November 12, 2013 from 11 a.m. to noon will be the workshop entitled “Trans 201: Exploring Gender and Identity.” Then from 1 to 2 p.m. will be the second workshop, “Mental Health and Trans Issues.” Both will be in Walb Union, Rooms G21-G21A and facilitated by Rebecca Kling, transgender artist and author of No Gender Left Behind. Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m. following the workshops, Kling will perform her act titled: “Storms Beneath Her Skin” in Neff, Room 101 from 7 to 8 p.m. Kling’s performance is open to the public and will have a light reception and book signing afterwards. Kling’s book, No Gender Left Behind will be available for purchase at the event.
The workshops and performance by Rebecca Kling are sponsored by IPFW Resource Center, Indiana-Purdue Student Government Association (IPSGA), IPFW OUTspoken, Safe Zone at IPFW, and the IPFW Psychology Department.
Wednesday, November 20, 2013 will mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day dedicated to ending transphobic violence, in Walb Student Union, Room 222-226 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Guest speaker J. Basiliere will start the night off with a lecture, including a reading of those lost due to transphobic violence, and a candle light memorial. After the lecture, there will be a march around campus to support the cause, with a reception immediately following. This event is free and open to the public.
Transgender Day of Remembrance is sponsored by the IPFW Resource Center, Indiana-Purdue Student Government Association (IPSGA), IPFW OUTspoken, The Northeast Indiana Diversity Library, Northeast Indiana LGBTQ Coalition, Fort Wayne PFLAG, the Fort Wayne Police Department, and Safe Zone at IPFW.
