More Than 80 Companies Honored for Hiring Practices Supporting Veterans

(November 4, 2013) – The Northeast Indiana Human Resource Association (NIHRA) and WorkOne Northeast honored more than 80 local companies today for their commitment to hiring veterans.

Bonnie Moorman, workforce readiness director for NIHRA and state workforce readiness director for the National Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), said the unemployment rate for veterans is often higher than for other prospective employees, even though veterans offer a wide range of skills learned in the military.

“Many companies regionally have learned the value of integrating those military skills and values with civilian workforce practices,” Moorman said. “The contributions our veterans can bring to the region’s workforces are indeed great.”

During today’s recognition ceremony at Hotel Fort Wayne, representatives of BAE Systems and Fort Wayne Metals Inc. showcased effective programs for helping veterans transition from active duty to civilian employment.

For its part, WorkOne Northeast, a skills-building and training program of the Northeast Indiana Regional Workforce Investment Board, makes veterans a priority in seeking and securing employment opportunities.

The recognition event was part of a three-year NIHRA veterans support initiative that has included career readiness training programs and job fairs.
The initiative is one of 17 finalists nationally for a SHRM Pinnacle Award. The finalists will be honored Nov. 21 at a leadership conference in Washington, D.C.
