News release from Aunt Millie’s:

100,000 loaves of bread to Midwestern foodbanks this holiday season

(November 4, 2013) – Since 2009, Aunt Millie’s has donated loaves of bread to regional foodbanks during the holiday season. This season, the company will instead begin donating their bakeries’ surplus loaves, increasing the donation to over 100,000 loaves. By utilizing the surplus, Aunt Millie’s will also be able to continue donating loaves all year long.

Previously, surplus bread was distributed via the company’s outlet stores. By redirecting some of these loaves into donations, Aunt Millie’s expects to ultimately donate much more than 100,000 loaves as the program continues into 2014. The new donation protocol also greatly reduces the amount of bread wasted or thrown away, offering a sustainable, long-term solution for the company and for the region’s foodbanks.

The bread will be donated to Feeding America affiliated food banks in Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Jackson, Michigan; Bloomington, Fort Wayne, Lafayette, Muncie and South Bend, Indiana; Chicago and Urbana, Illinois; and Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio, and to other foodbanks in Coldwater, Michigan and in Sidney, Ohio.

Between November 4 and December 25, Aunt Millie’s mainline breads will appear in holiday packaging, with a golden loaf graphic announcing the donations.
