What to expect weather wise, from the National Weather Service.

Under the Dome of High Pressure

Temperatures are sizzling across the Plains while that part of the U.S. remains under a “dome” of high pressure. While not an impenetrable bubble that severs all contact with the outside world, a heat dome does “trap” hot air underneath it over the course of several days, often over a large area.

Here’s why: when a sprawling area of high pressure develops in the mid to upper atmosphere, the air beneath it slowly sinks and warms as it is compressed. As a result, temperatures steadily heat up near the surface (especially in the summer when the sun angle is high and if there are few clouds).

Hot summer weather ahead

Hot and humid conditions will settle in for the remainder of the week with high temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. A small chance for isolated thunderstorms exist on Tuesday and Wednesday, mainly in eastern areas. For the latest forecast information, see our webpage at www.weather.gov/iwx
