TinCaps Win, Take Three of Four From Loons

Midland, Mich. (August 20, 2013) – For the fourth time in 2013’s second half, the TinCaps can call themselves series winners. A 4-2 final score favored Fort Wayne Tuesday night against the Great Lakes Loons, propelling the TinCaps to their third win in the four-game series.

Fort Wayne (22-35, 64-61) scored with power in the early innings. Diego Goris hit a solo home run in the second inning, which was his second homer in as many days, to give the TinCaps a 1-0 lead against Loons starter Jonathan Martinez (2-4). Tyler Stubblefield tripled later in the inning and came in to score on a Miguel Del Castillo RBI single. Fort Wayne finished the game with a season-high three triples.

Alberth Martinez hit a two-run home run in the third inning off of Jonathan Martinez, becoming the TinCaps’ first player to reach double digits in home runs with 10. Jonathan Martinez exited after five innings having allowed seven hits, four earned runs, walking one and striking out two.

On the other side, Colin Rea made his first start in a TinCaps uniform since September 13, 2012, which was game two of the Midwest League championship series. Rea went only four innings, unable to qualify for a win, but fanned six in his return to the starting rotation. He gave up just one earned run, walked one and limited Great Lakes (32-25, 58-69) to three hits.

The Loons’ only other run came on a solo home run off the bat of catcher Jose Capellan, who took TinCaps reliever Matt Chabot (5-1) deep in the seventh inning. Fort Wayne relievers combined for five innings of one-run relief, capped by Roman Madrid’s 1-2-3 ninth inning for his league-leading 21st save.

On the basepaths, Mallex Smith picked up three stolen bases, bringing his total to a Midwest League-leading 57 for the year. With 13 games to play in the regular season, Smith is eight stolen bases away from the Fort Wayne franchise record, held by both Jeremy Owens (1999) and Rymer Liriano (2011).

The TinCaps return home to begin a three-game series against the South Bend Silver Hawks Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The scheduled starters are Bryan Rodriguez for the TinCaps and Rob Coe for the Silver Hawks. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
