September, October & November activities scheduled at Science Central
(August 15, 2013) – Science Central, the region’s premier gateway for informal science education, has slated the following activities for the months of September, October & November 2013:
Sunday, September 1-Sunday, September 8 – “Wild Minds – What Animals Really Think”
This is the last week to visit Science Central’s traveling exhibition, Wild Minds: What Animals Really Think to get some great insights about what goes on inside Fido’s brain. Wild Minds demonstrates just how bright our friends in the animal kingdom can be. You’ll learn about animals’ cognitive skills long thought to make human beings unique: using tools, solving problems, self-awareness, and the ability to communicate. By using a variety of videos, games and displays, you’ll learn about how animals’ environments have shaped their thinking abilities.
This world-class exhibit was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, and was developed in cooperation with the Columbus Zoo and COSI; Staten Island Zoo and the New York Hall of Science; Portland Zoo and Oregon Museum of Science & Industry; Santa Barbara Zoo and the California Science Center; and Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo and Science Central.
Monday, September 2 – Friday, September 6 – Science Central Fall Shut Down for Maintenance
Science Central will be closed this week for building and exhibit maintenance. The center will be open on Saturday, September 7, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, September 8, Noon-5 p.m.
Sunday, September 8 – “Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown,” Noon-5 p.m.
Science Central, as part of Visit Fort Wayne’s Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown, will offer free admission on Sunday, September 8. To take advantage of this offer, area residents may pick up a passport at any Fort Wayne Kroger or Tower Bank location, or may download a one-page passport online at www.VisitFortWayne.com/beatourist. On Be A Tourist day, the passport will serve as free admission to 12 of Fort Wayne’s participating attractions and museums. One passport is good for an entire party. In addition to Science Central, participating attractions include: African/African-American History Museum; Allen County Courthouse; Artlink; Embassy Theatre; Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory; Historic Fort Wayne; History Center; Fort Wayne Museum of Art; Parkview Field; The Lincoln Tower; and Visit Fort Wayne Visitors Center. Monday, September 9 – Friday, September 13 – Science Central Fall Shut Down for Maintenance

Saturday, September 14 – January 5, 2014 – BAE Systems presents: “Electricity” Traveling Exhibition
From the city where Benjamin Franklin flew his kite, you’ll be attracted to Science Central’s next traveling exhibition as BAE Systems presents “Electricity.” Developed by The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, PA, electricity is explored and presented through highly-engaging hands-on displays. You can safely examine such concepts as static electricity and live current; motors, batteries and wires; attraction and repulsion; sparks, charge and discharge; voltage, AC and DC; magnetic fields and magnetic motion; lights, telegraphs and transmitters, and more.
Saturday, September 28 – Last Saturday and IOPO “Life is Cool” Day at Science Central
In conjunction with the Downtown Improvement District, Science Central will offer half-price admission on the last Saturday of the month, Saturday, September 28. Admission will be just $4 all day.
Also scheduled for September 28th is the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization (IOPO) “Life is Cool!” event at Science Central, an interactive educational opportunity for families. Hands-on activity stations allow participants to learn about how the organs and tissues of the body function, the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle, and the miracle of organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Participants can listen to their own heartbeat, examine and touch pig organs, compare the fat and sodium content of foods, experience what it’s like to suffer from corneal blindness and more. All visitors will receive a prize bag with a variety of materials from the Indiana Organ Procurement Organization and other participating agencies.
Thursday, October 3 – Home School Discount Day

Saturday, October 5 – Science On a Sphere Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting
Science Central’s long-awaited new exhibit, Science On a Sphere, will open to the public today in the AEP Foundation Theater, newly constructed on Science Central’s west side. The official ribbon cutting will take place at 11 a.m. Doors to Science Central will open at 10 a.m., and admission is free from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. Regular admission prices will resume at 11 a.m.
Science on a Sphere is a dynamic, animated global display system developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It uses computers and video projectors to show planetary data on a six-foot diameter sphere. It was developed by NOAA researchers initially as a research tool, and ultimately as an educational tool to illustrate science to people of all ages. To the naked eye, the Sphere actually appears to be floating and rotating in mid-air, just like a real planet. It will be a “must see” exhibit at Science Central, illustrating earth, space and social sciences. It will also provide real-time imagery, such as satellite, buoy and sensing station links to global weather, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other activities occurring on Earth, as well as NASA images of the planets and moons of our solar system.
Tuesday, October 8 – Half-Pint Science/”3,2,1 Blast Off!”
Children will explore the world of hands-on science from a kids-eye view in Science Central’s Half-Pint Science programs. Today, picture your child as an astronaut as they suit up for a morning of out-of-this world fun. We will blast off rockets, dress as astronauts and make space food. Half-Pint Science programs are 1½ hours long, and include four hands-on science activities, time to explore Kid’s Central, and a snack. This program is for preschoolers, ages 2 to 5, with their designated adult. Cost is $12 for a non-member child/adult pair, $8 for a member child/adult pair. Additional children and/or adults cost $6/non-members, $4/members, and includes admission to Science Central during the program. Tuesday, October 8 – Afternoon Science/ Chemistry Labs & “What’s the Matter” Demo
Due to overwhelming response to Science Central’s Afternoon Science, programs have been moved to Tuesdays for the 2013-2014 school year. This special day, when Science Central is closed to the general public, offers home school students the opportunity to spend an afternoon together participating in scientific labs for ages 5-8, 9-12 and 13-16; a “What’s the Matter” demonstration, and exhibit exploration. Check-in time is 1:30 to 1:45 p.m., and program is 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Cost is $6 per student for the lab and demo, admission is $4* per non-member (*participating and non-participating children and adults), and is free for members.

Saturday, October 12 – Lunch with an IPFW Scientist: Human Skeletons and Mummies
No bones about it – you’ll learn more about the world of anthropology at the first Lunch with an IPFW Scientist of the season at Science Central on Saturday, October 12. IPFW Professor Rick Sutter, Chair and Professor of Anthropology, will discuss and field questions about mummies, skeletons and more. The program is for families with young people ages 8 and up. Wednesday, October 16 – One Price Wednesday
School groups can get two great field trips for one great price on One Price Wednesday! Science Central, in partnership with The McMillen Center for Health Education, offers two field trips at one great price!

- The Deluxe Pass is $8/student, and includes one McMillen Center program and admission to Science Central, including a science demonstration.
- The Premium Pass is $10/student, and includes two McMillen Center programs and admission to Science Central, including a science demonstration.

Saturday, October 19 – Science Central celebrates “Fright Night” with the DID
Science Central will have our eye on you with our new Science On a Sphere exhibit. Stop in to see the world’s biggest eyeball, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and take a look at some of the greatest catastrophes to hit our planet. Standard admission applies.
Plus, visit Science Central’s table at the Allen County Public Library Plaza as part of the Downtown Improvement District’s Fright Night. Kids can make their own disgustingly gross batch of Zombie Snot, from noon to 5 p.m. This activity is free, while supplies last!
Saturday, October 26 – Last Saturday & Soarin’ Hawk Raptor Rehab Day
In conjunction with the Downtown Improvement District, Science Central will offer half-price admission on the last Saturday of the month, Saturday, October 26. Admission will be just $4 all day.
Also scheduled for October 26, and beginning at 1:30 p.m., is a demonstration by the Soarin’ Hawk Raptor Rehab Center. This organization is dedicated to the rescue, recovery and release of injured or orphaned birds of prey. They will discuss their program, and feature their rescued birds at Science Central.
Friday, November 1 – Mixology 301: The Science of Cocktails Benefit Gala
Science Central will be closed to the public today during normal operating hours, as preparations are made for Mixology 301: The Science of Cocktails. Science Central will turn its focus to educational fun for adults as it hosts its annual fundraising gala. The event, which runs from 6:30-10:30 p.m. at Science Central, 1950 N. Clinton Street, will showcase the past, present and future of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education to the Fort Wayne community, and will also feature Science Central’s new exhibit, Science On a Sphere.
The grownups-only gala event will feature award-winning mixologists from around the country creating specialty cocktails; students and professors from Ivy Tech’s culinary program conducting food demonstrations with cutting-edge gastronomy tools; and fabulous hors d’oeuvres. A silent auction with items ranging from tickets to Walt Disney World, a big-screen television from Audio-Video Lifestyles, to getaway weekends around the region, will also take place during the course of the evening, accompanied by the music of The Todd Harrold Band. They’re black and white, eat bamboo, and are native to China. But what don’t we know about pandas? IPFW Chair and Professor of Biology, Frank Paladino, will lead a discovery session about these rare and unusual animals on Saturday, November 9, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The program is for families with young people ages 8 and up. Saturday, November 17 – First Lego League Regional Qualifying Tournament
LEGOs and robots come together to help teams solve real-world problems at Science Central’s 11th annual FIRST LEGO® League (FLL) Indiana Qualifying Tournament. The event is slated for Saturday, November 17, 2013, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at Science Central, 1950 N. Clinton Street.
Teams of students, ages 9-14, from northeastern Indiana have been tasked with the challenge and excitement of designing and building an original robot in the FIRST LEGO® League Qualifying Tournament. These teams of children and their adult mentors will demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship, and sense of community.

Thursday, November 28 – Science Central Closed
Science Central will be closed today for the Thanksgiving holiday. Normal operating hours will resume on Friday, November 29.
Friday, November 29-Sunday, December 1 – Science Central “Festival of Trains”
Trains of all sizes will pull into Science Central for the 15th annual Festival of Trains, Friday, November 29 through Sunday, December 1. Model trains will be on display throughout the weekend. Science Central will be open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission costs for this event are $8 for adults and children ages 3-12; $7 for seniors 65 and over; children two and under are admitted free. Last Saturday discounts are not available for this event.
