News release from IPFW:

4th Annual Docs vs. Suits Game Set for Sunday, August 18

(August 13, 2013) – The fourth annual Docs vs. Suits charity softball game will take place at 6 p.m. at Parkview Field on Sunday, August 18. The seven-inning slow-pitch softball game will raise money for scholarships and program development at Indiana University School of Medicine-Fort Wayne, located on the campus of IPFW. Admission to the event is free.

This year’s game is high stakes for the players, as the Docs are looking to even the series at two games apiece.

The teams competing in the game are comprised of community business people and physicians. Local athletes Ron Howard (Mad Ants) and Kaleigh Schrock (Komets) as well as sports directors Glenn Marini and Tommy Schoegler have been added to the rosters.

Scholarship opportunities continue to be a focus of fundraising, as approximately 90 percent of the graduates of Indiana University School of Medicine have student loan debt averaging $170,000, according to the Student Financial Serivces office. Scholarship opportunities attract students to our Fort Wayne campus, where students have opportunities to learn from area physicians in clinical encounters. This helps community recruitment of physicians, as studies have shown that the location of medical education impacts where some new physicians practice medicine.

Funds raised at this event are also used to enhance the curriculum at the Fort Wayne campus. Past proceeds have been used to implement ultrasonography in the anatomy course as well as expand the simulation exercises offered at our campus. Simulation exercises allow students to experience diagnosing and treating illnesses using critical thinking
skills without a threat of harm to a patient.

In addition to the game, attendees can win door prizes, vote for the Fan Favorite Player on each team, and participate in a silent auction of gift cards from local restaurants.
