Domoromo, Fried Lead TinCaps To Series Victory

(August 12, 2013) – Powered by two Luis Domoromo triples and six Max Fried strikeouts, the TinCaps defeated the Dayton Dragons, 8-5, Monday night at Parkview Field. The victory gave Fort Wayne its second victory in a row and second consecutive home series win.

With the TinCaps leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Domoromo hit his first triple of the game to right-center field against Dragons starter Sal Romano (6-9). Domoromo scored on the play, as the relay throw by Dayton shortstop Zach Vincej to third base ended up in the visiting dugout.

Fort Wayne’s Venezuelan left fielder came up with his second triple of the game in a big spot in the home fourth. His team up 3-0 at this point with two outs and the bases loaded, Domoromo rocketed a Romano pitch to straightaway-center field. Dragons center fielder Beau Amaral nearly caught the ball on the run, but instead, it came out of his glove as his body collided with the turf. As the ball rolled to the fence, all three runners scored to give the TinCaps a 6-0 lead.

Fried (6-5) entered Monday’s start on a streak of 13 scoreless innings pitched and extended that to a season-long 17 through the game’s first four innings. In the top of the fifth, though, Dayton (27-24, 55-65) became the first team to score against the left-hander since July 25. Sammy Diaz and Jesse Winker both produced RBI singles to cut Fort Wayne’s lead to 6-2.

The TinCaps increased their lead back to six, 8-2, in the home fifth inning on a two-run double by shortstop Reynaldo Bruguera, who collected the first two RBIs of his Fort Wayne (19-31, 62-57) career. Bruguera joined the TinCaps a week ago from the Arizona League. He had a team-high three hits Monday.

The Dragons chipped into their deficit with three in the road sixth. Fried departed with one out in the frame after allowing a double and a walk. The 19-year-old’s final line included four runs (three earned), a career-high six walks, and six strikeouts. He threw a career-high 102 pitches. Jorge Guzman replaced Fried, letting both inherited runs score on a triple by Brandon Dailey, who came in on an RBI single by Diaz that made it 8-5.

Matt Chabot, Chris Nunn, and Roman Madrid teamed to throw 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the TinCaps to preserve the win. The Dragons stranded 15 runners on base, including three in the ninth inning.

Fort Wayne is off Tuesday before beginning a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Parkview Field on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Matthew Shepherd is scheduled to start for the TinCaps against the Hot Rods’ Reinaldo Lopez. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com, and seen on XFINITY Channel 81.
