News release from the TinCaps:

TinCaps Swept by Silver Hawks

South Bend, IN (August 9, 2013) – Call it the Curse of Coveleski Stadium. Not since August 1st, 2012, have the TinCaps won in South Bend’s ballpark, and that streak carried on Friday night, as the Silver Hawks defeated Fort Wayne 7-6, earning a sweep of the three-game series. Fort Wayne got home runs from Brian Adams and Rodney Daal in the losing effort.

As was the case Thursday night, the TinCaps got out to an early lead on an RBI double by Daal in the second inning. South Bend (29-19, 73-44) issued a run-filled retort in the bottom of the second, nearly knocking Fort Wayne (17-30, 60-56) starter Joe Ross (4-7) from the game. The 20-year-old Californian surrendered five runs, facing all but one batter in the Silver Hawks lineup.

Ross was removed from the game in the third, recording just one out in the inning and having given up one more run. The 2 1/3 innings of work marked the second-shortest full-season outing of his career and the shortest for him this year. In all, he was charged for six earned runs, five hits, four walks and he did not strike out a batter.

The TinCaps sparked a rally in the sixth inning against reliever Tyler Green. Trailing, 7-2, after a fourth-inning homer by Brian Adams, his first since May 13th, Fort Wayne scored four times in the sixth. Daal hit a one-out home run, Tyler Stubblefield and Alberth Martinez each drove in a run, and Martinez later scored on a wild pitch.

The South Bend lead remained at 7-6 heading into the eighth inning when the TinCaps had their best chance of the night to close the gap. Reliever Yoimer Camacho walked Mallex Smith to lead off the inning, and Tyler Stubblefield reached on an infield single, which landed him at second base and Smith at third after a Camacho throwing error. With no outs and the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Fort Wayne’s offense did not get a ball out of the infield, and South Bend averted the threat.

Matt Chabot and Chris Nunn combined for 5 2/3 innings of one-run relief. Chabot surrendered one run over 3 2/3 innings and Nunn worked two perfect frames. The two combined to retire the final 12 batters they faced.

South Bend starter Blake Perry (7-5) earned the win, giving up two runs over five innings. Lefty Jose Jose notched his fifth save.

Fort Wayne returns home Saturday for the start of a three-game series with the Dayton Dragons. The scheduled starters are Walker Weickel for the TinCaps and Amir Garrett for the Dragons. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
