News release from the University of Saint Francis:

Photographers’ work spotlighted in USF’s Presidential Gala

(August 1, 2013) – The work of three contemporary photographers will headline the Presidential Gala at the University of Saint Francis, which opens Sept. 7 from 6-9 p.m. in Weatherhead Gallery in the Rolland Center for Art and Visual Communication. The gala is the official opening of the exhibition season at the university and is free to the public. RSVP at gala-2013.eventbrite.com.

“Beyond the Human Experience: Three Contemporary Photographers – Luis Gonzalez Palma, Gabriela Morawetz and Holly Roberts” will showcase three internationally recognized photographers that define the human experience as a visual language figuratively and symbolically.

Guatemala resident González Palma examines the power of communication through the gaze and body language of his subjects. His work is influenced by his “mestizo” heritage and that of the indigenous Mayas of Guatemala.

Morawetz, of Poland, is an installation artist who describes the sleeping self as it relates to human sub-consciousness and isolation.

Roberts, an American, is a painter and collage artist who manipulates her original photographs as canvases to describe unknown interpersonal realities that heighten the natural and sublime found in the world.

Each artist uses photography and non-traditional media such as paint, collage, fabric and metal to create uniquely visual works that fascinate the viewing audience.

This exhibition is made possible in part by Barnes and Thornburg. It runs through Oct. 6. Weatherhead Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. For more information, call (260) 399-8064.

In conjunction with this exhibition, the adjacent Artist Spotlight Gallery will display a collection of photographs donated to the University of Saint Francis by nationally recognized photographer and instructor, Stephen Perfect. These photographs are by Perfect’s artist partners or students over a 30-year teaching career at Saint Francis College, Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne and the Maine Photography Workshops and College.

Additionally, the university’s Closer Look Lecture series will spotlight Holly Roberts, her work and philosophy on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the North Campus auditorium at 2702 Spring St. This lecture is sponsored by Ronald Kysiak and Diane Lupke. Closer Look lectures and performances are free to the public, with this year’s series made possible in part by Canon Explorers of Light, Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne, the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
