Errors, Silver Hawks Prove TinCaps’ Downfall

South Bend, IN (August 8, 2013) – Despite a second-inning inside-the-park home run by Diego Goris, the Fort Wayne TinCaps managed just four more hits for the evening Thursday night, falling by a 4-1 final against the South Bend Silver Hawks at Coveleski Stadium. All of the TinCaps’ five hits came in the first five innings, as the final thirteen batters of the game came and went without reaching base.

Goris’ homer was the first hit of the game for Fort Wayne (17-29, 60-55), which went down in order in the first inning against South Bend (28-19, 72-44) starter Kyle Winkler (3-3). The TinCaps third baseman hit a bloop to shallow right, which was overrun by Silver Hawks right fielder Socrates Brito. His momentum carried him over the field’s side boundary and into a grassy, terraced berm down the right field line. The ball continued to roll to the right-field corner, 336 feet away from home plate as both the second baseman and center fielder gave chase. Goris scored without a tag from catcher Michael Perez, notching his fourth homer of the year.

Alex Glenn responded in the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run off of TinCaps starter Bryan Rodriguez (2-6), tying the game at one. Rodriguez, who tossed six innings, allowed the second run of his outing in the fourth. Breland Almadova led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a groundout, and scored on a Michael Perez sacrifice fly.

The last run surrendered by Rodriguez came in the third, when Andrew Velazquez led off with a single to left, but took second as the ball was misplayed by TinCaps left fielder Luis Domoromo. He later came around to score when, on a ground ball hit to shortstop Tyler Stubblefield, catcher Rodney Daal dropped the throw home, which arrived prior to Velazquez sliding in. South Bend added its final run in the eighth on an Almadova RBI single.

The Silver Hawks’ pitching trio of Winkler, Enrique Garcia and Enrique Burgos combined to keep the TinCaps off the bases for the final four-and-one-third innings of play. Fort Wayne went down in order in the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, striking out four times in those four innings and seven times for the game.

South Bend’s dominance of Fort Wayne continued in the loss, as they improved their record against the TinCaps to 13-2 this season. Fort Wayne has still not registered a win at Coveleski Stadium since August 1, 2012.

The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for Friday night at 7:35 p.m. The scheduled starters are Joe Ross for Fort Wayne and Blake Perry for South Bend. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
