Silver Hawks Continue Dominance of TinCaps

South Bend, IN (August 7, 2013) – Searching for their first win at Coveleski Stadium since August 1, 2012, the Fort Wayne TinCaps were out of luck Wednesday night, losing 5-2 to the South Bend Silver Hawks. The TinCaps are now just 2-12 against their in-state rivals this season.

The Silver Hawks secured a 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring an unearned run against Fort Wayne (17-28, 60-54) starter Matthew Shepherd (4-4). TinCaps centerfielder Mallex Smith made a two-out error, dropping a fly ball, which put South Bend’s Socrates Brito on base. Two batters later Rudy Flores singled home Brito to make it a 1-0 game.

The Silver Hawks tacked on two more in the second on a two-run home run by Fidel Pena, his ninth homer of the season. Shepherd averted trouble in the third, but a leadoff triple by Carter Bell turned into a run one batter later on a Pedro Ruiz sacrifice fly, giving South Bend (27-19, 71-44) a 4-0 advantage. Shepherd was knocked from the game with two outs in the fifth inning after plunking Bell with the bases loaded, expanding the Silver Hawks’ lead to 5-0.

Jesse Darrah (10-7), who started for South Bend, held the TinCaps hitless across his seven innings on the hill. He struck out two and walked five, with only one Fort Wayne baserunner reaching third base on his watch.

The TinCaps got on the board in the ninth inning with a bit of help from Silver Hawks reliever Enrique Burgos. He walked both Miguel Del Castillo and Mallex Smith with the bases loaded, forcing in Fort Wayne’s two runs.

The South Bend win snapped a three-game winning streak for the TinCaps, who return to action Thursday night at Coveleski Stadium for game two of this three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. The scheduled pitching matchup pits Fort Wayne’s Bryan Rodriguez against South Bend’s Kyle Winkler. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
