Volunteers Spruce Up FWCS Buildings for United Way Day of Caring

(July 30, 2013) – Nearly 150 volunteers will clean, paint and spruce up the landscaping at nine Fort Wayne Community Schools buildings Thursday, Aug. 1, as part of United Way of Allen County’s annual Day of Caring.

Nine businesses and community groups signed up to work at schools throughout the city from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to get the buildings in shape for registration, which begins Friday.

The friendships formed on Day of Caring often turn into long-term partnerships between the businesses and the schools with employees returning to volunteer or help the schools in other ways throughout the school year.

Below are the Day of Caring sites and the teams working at the sites on Thursday:

* Indian Village Elementary, 3835 Wenonah Lane – SwissRe
* Kekionga Middle School, 2929 Engle Road – Hylant Group
* Lane Middle School, 4901 Vance Ave. – Fort Wayne Community Schools
* Miami Middle School, 8100 Amherst Drive – Raytheon
* Nebraska Elementary, 1525 Boone St. – Ingram Content Group
* Northcrest Elementary, 5301 Archwood Lane – AccuGear
* Shawnee Middle School, 1000 E. Cook Road – Vera Bradley
* Study Elementary, 2414 Brooklyn Ave. – NIPSCO

 

With nearly 31,000 students, Fort Wayne Community Schools is Indiana’s largest school district. FWCS proudly allows families to choose any of its 51 schools through its successful school-choice program creating diversity in each school, including some with more than 75 languages spoken. FWCS offers seven magnet schools focusing on areas such as science and math, communication, fine arts or Montessori at the elementary and middle school level. In high school, students can choose from the prestigious International Baccalaureate program, Project Lead the Way or New Tech Academy as well as other rigorous academic and specialty training programs.
