TinCaps Edged in Pitchers’ Duel

(July 21, 2013) – One night after beating Cedar Rapids at Parkview Field by a 1-0 score, the TinCaps lost another pitchers’ duel with the Kernels on Sunday afternoon, 2-1. Brian Adams drove in Fort Wayne’s only run with a fifth-inning single, but a two-run home run by Adam Brett Walker in the sixth proved to be the difference.

Cedar Rapids (20-9, 59-37) received a superb start from Mason Melotakis (8-3), who allowed only one run across six innings. The left-hander limited Fort Wayne (11-18, 54-44) to four hits and one walk, while striking out six. Reliever David Hurlbut retired all nine batters he faced to earn his sixth save of the season.

Adams’ RBI hit in the bottom of the fifth came with two outs and brought Chris Burke home from second base. Burke had led the frame off with a single — one of his two hits in the game — and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Luis Domoromo. Adams became the first TinCap this season to reach 40 RBI.

Joe Ross (4-5) kept the Kernels off the scoreboard for the first five innings, but Cedar Rapids scored for the first time in the series in the sixth. Jorge Polanco singled and came home on Walker’s Midwest League-leading 21st homer of the season that hit off the 400 Club in center field. The runs ended a streak of 11 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings for Fort Wayne’s right-hander.

The TinCaps put two runners in scoring position against Melotakis in the bottom of the sixth with one out, but couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. Fort Wayne went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. On the other side the Kernels, who lead the Midwest League in offense, went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left eight on base.

Fort Wayne and Cedar Rapids wrap up their three-game series at Parkview Field on Monday night at 7:05. Walker Weickel (3-4, 4.66) will start for the TinCaps against Midwest League All-Star Jose Berrios (5-5, 3.93). The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com, and seen on XFINITY Channel 81.
